I am a natural magnet for bloodsucking mosquitos. Since I live in Hawaii and been traveling in Brazil for a few months now, I have extensive experience in how to treat and prevent mosquito bites. As you all know, some species of this nasty insect carry serious mosquito borne diseases such as malaria, dengue, West Nile virus, yellow fever, encephalitis, and the Zika virus.
Read on to learn my tried and true ways to keep these nasty, relentless insects from biting you without using harsh chemicals.
5 Ways to Treat & Prevent Mosquito Bites Naturally
1) Wear light colored clothing to repel mosquitos
Mosquitos are attracted to dark colors so make sure you wear light shades like white or colorful clothing. And try to keep covered. Long sleeves and pants go a long way in preventing pesky mosquito bites! There’s even a whole line of “Bug Free” clothes you can buy with a special mosquito repellent called permethrin built right in. A bit pricey but highly recommended.
2) Apply Essential Oil sprays on exposed body parts
Tragically, Brazil has some of the nicest beaches and weather in the world. You will need to protect your exposed skin if you are going to fit in with that string bikini or those shirtless boardshorts.
Essential oil sprays repel mosquitos from landing on you, but they must be reapplied every 2 hours. Amazingly effective, yet still smells great and good for your skin, unlike harsh chemical sprays. Buy online or make yourself like I do…
My easy DIY mosquito repellent INSTRUCTIONS:
- Soak 10 handfuls of cloves in ethyl alcohol for 4 or more days
- Strain and mix in 20% of carrier oil (almond oil or avocado oil). I learned that coconut oil is not a good option where it gets cool at night… it solidifies when the temp drops just a tad!
- optional: Add a few drops of your favorite essential oils that are known to repel mosquitos like citronella and lemongrass oil.
3) Mosquito Net at night
Since it’s not practical to wake up every 2 hours to apply the above natural mosquito repellent, this item is essential in unscreened homes (the norm in Brasil). This one comes with a travel bag, hanging kit, and fits any sized bed, crib, etc:
4) Apply Bee Propolis on bites
This amazing Bee Propolis extract decreases inflammation, itchiness, pain, and swelling of mosquito bites. Works fast and amazingly good. Propolis is a waxy substance made by bees that is anti-inflammatory and has a host of several other benefits — truly a miracle product of nature.
5) Use loads of garlic!
Lastly, eat raw garlic to cleanse your blood of potential viruses, bacteria, toxins from bites and potentially discourage mosquitos from biting you (although some say this is a myth). Also, garlic applied topically and around the house/yard works well to repel mosquitos. “Mosquito Barrier” is a popular liquid lawn and area spray made form very potent garlic cloves:
